History part Deux
The fact businessmen see Iraq as a way to fill their coffers is nothing new
Where ever the Roman army went, their businessmen followed. This caused quite a bit of resenment due to them bleeding the locals dry in the Roman province Asia so it was not suprising that they gave their support to Mithridates VI of Pontus when he launched an attack against the Roman Republic.
The Equites (the two upper social classes of the Roman Republic) often had business links with the provinces and when their interests were threatened they usually demanded action e.g. when Jugurtha of Numidia sacked Cirta (modern day Constantine in Algeria) he masscred the businessmen there so a Roman army was dispatched to teach him a lesson.
