Cameron: government in meltdown
Seven quit government in Blair protest
Seven members of Tony Blair's government resigned today as formerly loyal MPs demanded that the prime minister publicly names a date for his departure.More rats leave the sinking ship and what makes this even more interesting is the fact that they are loyal Blarites, Tony Blair is toast, I don't see how he can last much longer.
One junior minister, Tom Watson, resigned along with six parliamentary private secretaries.
The departures followed 48 hours of leaks and rampant speculation about an exit timetable for the prime minister. Today's open rebellion came after Downing Street described reports of Mr Blair quitting in May as "speculation", but did not deny them.
The Conservative leader, David Cameron, speaking during a tour of India, said the government was "divided and in meltdown".
All seven government members to resign were MPs who yesterday signed a round robin letter calling for Mr Blair to publicly confirm the date of his departure.
The PM hit back at Mr Watson, calling him "disloyal, discourteous and wrong" for having signed the letter.
The six PPSs who have quit are Khalid Mahmood, Wayne David, Ian Lucas, Mark Tami, David Wright and Chris Mole.
