Minister resigns and urges Blair to go

One of Tony Blair's ministers resigned from his post today and called on the prime minister to do the same.

News of Tom Watson's departure came as Downing Street described reports that Mr Blair would step down next May as "speculation".

Mr Watson, a junior defence minister, was thought to have signed but then removed his name from yesterday's letter calling for the prime minister to name a departure date.

As he quite front bench politics today, he said it was "not in the interest of either the party or the country" for Mr Blair to remain in office.

Today's Sun - often a source of well-informed leaks from No 10 - claimed Mr Blair would resign as Labour leader on May 31, triggering an eight-week leadership contest that would mean him departing as prime minister at the end of July.

Well thats just typical of Tony Blair to leak to The Sun, consdering he is in the thrall of the Dirty Digger (Rupert Murdoch)!

The storm clouds are gathering over Blair, should make for an interesting autumn Labour party conference at Manchester.
