The Bush Junta's much vaunted 'democracy on the march' has proven hollow, what the Bush Junta (and their Neocon backers) fail to understand is that you cannot force a democracy on a populace, it has to be organic and it must come from within their culture/religion. It is stupid to try and establish a Judaeo-Christann based democracy on a largely Islamic Middle East not only that the US needs to stop trying to create countries in their own image, it helps no one.
The US like Britain and France before them are hypocrites, they are quite happy to support despotic regimes in places like Saudi Arabia when it suits their purpose and are qute happy to 'regime change' like what happened in Iraq when the leader does not do what he or she is told.
If any country tries to follow another path it is labelled a 'terrorist country' and attacked like what has happened to Venezuela after they elected Hugo Chavez, because he did not become servile to America (like our Prime Minister Blair), Venezuela therefore becomes a 'dangerous' state.
The ones who suffer most in these games of geopolitics are the ordinary people, who only want a better life for them and their children.

The Syrian president has called on his army to increase its readiness to cope with "regional challenges."This is a cause for concern, as if the Middle East is not destablised enough with Iraq and Afghanistan.
Bashar al-Assad made the comments on Monday during an annual address to the military
The order came as Israel and Hezbollah fighters entered their 20th day of fighting in neighbouring Lebanon.
Travelers from Syria have reported that some reservists have been called up for military duty, a sign that Syria is concerned the fighting in Lebanon could spill over.
